Where were you in ’62 ?

As the final picture show at the Apache Drive-In approaches, and we prepare the final touches of our memory-making event at the Apache Drive-In on September 28, we ask you to think back to those wild and wooly days of the ’60s, and share your memories of growing up during that era.

I had forgotten how many groundbreaking events happened during the ’60s, not to mention the fashion experiments, fabulous cars and forever-memorable movies and music from this period.

If you were born between 1949 and 1964, you are one of 79 million baby boomers in this country. And as a boomer, whether you experienced the ’60s as a child, a teenager or an adult, you will remember these:

*The Apollo Moon Landing: I remember being at my grandmothers’ house in Kansas and knowing something important was up. My grandmother, who rarely paused to relax, halted her daily march of chores and baking that day, turned on the TV, and sat on the edge of her bed glued to the screen.

*The assassination of JFK. I was on the playground when news broke, and I saw the horror and sadness in the faces of teachers as they prepared to send us all home. I knew then that it was something far worse than when we had prepared for a nuclear disaster by crawling under our desk.

*Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In: When a young blonde made her debut as a ditzy, but loveable dancing billboard — Goldie Hawn

*Flip Wilson, who created the iconic line, “The Devil Made Me Do It!”

*Movies like “The Graduate,” “Dr. Strangelove,” “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “Planet of the Apes” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.”

*Groups like The Monkeys , Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass, the Rolling Stones, and oh yeah… the Beatles!

*Fashion, including: Big glasses, bigger hair, and of course blue eye shadow, it was the generation of both the mini dress and the Maxi dress. The fashion of Jackie O and Janis Joplin. From Haight Ashbury to the Hamptons, the ’60s reflected a class of cultural ideals.

We invite you to share your memories of the ’60s, including photos, a favorite YouTube video or just a thought or two.  So where were you in ’62?

And now that you’ve got your groove on for 1960, plan on joining us for a night a memory-making fun, as we celebrate the Apache Drive-In, which has served the Globe-Miami community for 60 years. The Apache Drive-In is one of the LAST outdoor movie screens to close in the state, having held out longer than 50 other drive-ins that have closed within the last thirty years. We think that is pretty special, so we are hosting one last picture show GALA EVENT to commemorate this moment in history.

We hope you will join us! For all the details on the event, and to purchase tickets see:

    I wasn’t even born in 1962. 🙂

  2. a gleam in my daddys eye.

  3. In ’62 I was split in two, my mother still seeking the other.

  4. I was probably stardust, but if I happened to be born then, I would probably be Joni Mitchell’s younger sidekick.

  5. I was not born yet but I bet it was a blast.

  6. I wasn’t born in 1962 ! But if I could choose any decade to live in I would choose the 1920’s or 1940’s, mostly because of the beautiful clothing ! (:

    • I loved the ’40s for the fact that people used to go out and dance to the sounds of the Big Bands. But the ’20s had alot of that too. And you couldn’t go out dancing in just anything. It had to have style!

  7. I was barely 2 years old in 1962. Coming from the East Coast, drive in movies were plentiful at the time. It is really a shame that slowly they are closing. Although I suppose if more people went on a regular basis, instead of the high dollar theaters the trend would switch.

  8. I wasn’t born yet.

  9. With the help of old Kodachrome slides that I am in the process of converting to JPG images my memory of those early 60 days is becoming sharper. My dad had his own business as a dental technician so He liked expensive things. We went to a boat show and decided to buy one of the ski boats on display a 12 foot G 3 Ski boat by Glastron it was powered by a 70 hp Merc outboard motor. To balance things out with Mom, Dad bought her a mink that she only wore a few times. That was the best part of 62
