1910 Sultan Building-Woolworth Store
United Jewelry:Â 2001 – Current
In 1910, brothers Louis and William Sultan constructed a newly reorganized two-story building on North Broad Street called the Sultan Brothers General Merchandise, after deciding the original one-story building in central Globe was too small. William successfully served as manager of the store, which offered an array of goods including crockery and gentleman’s furnishings. Prior to his role as manager, William Sultan served as the first mayor of Globe in 1907.
In 1916, the F. W. Woolworth Company took ownership of the building until it was gutted by a fire in 1935. A new one-story structure, designed in the popular Art Deco Architectural style, was built using what remainder of the original building. Woolworth’s operated for 79 more years. In 1993, the parent company to Woolworth’s forced closure on 800 of it’s stores, and in 1997, the store in Globe was the last Woolworth’s to close west of the Mississippi River.
Today the store is owned and operated by Mary Bernstein and family as United Jewelry Store. Merchandise includes jewelry, musical instruments and sporting goods.
