401 N. Broad Street Building-1910
Kino Floors-current
In 1910, W. W. Brookner built a two-story building on Broad Street and opened it as a large general merchandise store. It was constructed in the Modern Commercial style. Mr. Brookner leased the building to various businesses during his term as the Gila County Treasurer.
In 1954, the Arizona Department of Transportation widened Broad Street so U.S. 60 could run through the community. Unfortunately, all of the buildings on the east side of Broad lost their fronts and the beauty of W.W. Brookner’s building was lost.Â
In 2008, the current owners of the building, Dale and Cindy Fletcher, decided to refurbish the historic style o. During their renovation, they found the original two wooden door entry doors with beveled glass. They used the doors to recreate the front of the building. Â They also renovated the interior, and it was during this time that “figures” started to appear. A shadowy sight of a man is often witnessed climbing the stairs to the second floor.
According to Cindy Fletcher, there is an underground wood-supported tunnel underneath the lot. It is believed it was used by those living in the Chinese village on the other side of the Pinal Creek to get to the business district.
The building is currently operated as Kino Floors and Interior.
