Hamill Building-1906
Ortega Shoes- 19XX – current
Joseph Hamill, the publisher for the Arizona Silver Belt at the time, purchased a lot previously owned by the Federal Government on Broad Street. In 1906, Hamill constructed a two-story building in the Mission Revival style on the lot, making it distinct from other surrounding buildings.
After completion, Hamill leased the building to the Federal Government to be used as the Globe Post Office. He received $1000 per year until the Post Office moved in 1911.
In preparation for new tenants, Hamill completely changed the facade of the building to the Georgian Revival design. This made it appear incongruous with neighboring buildings.
Oscar A. Ingram moved his men’s furnishings store into the south half of the building,
under the management of T.L. Harris. Two yeas later, Creed Troutman and T.H. Ralston became co-owners of the clothing store. Jesse Gibson purchased one-third of the business’ interest, bought out his partners in 1932, and renamed the business Gibson’s Men’s Store.
After his death, his son Stanley Gibson, took over the business. Stan Gibson purchased the G. & G. Shoe Store in 1970 and combined it with his men’s shoe store. The Gibsons operated the business until Stanley retired in 1996.
