The very first movie theater came to Globe in the 1920’s when Alfred and Dominic Rabogliatti opened a Globe Theatre in part of their International Building at 636 N. Broad. But an advertisement in January of 1929 shows that talking pictures are coming here and the theater at that time was listed as being at 197 N. Broad.
Seats for the big event would cost 75c on the lower floor, 50 c in the balcony and children were 25c, and the event received lots of notoriety. A later story said people came from as far away as Phoenix, cowboys came on horseback and Indian families came in buckboards for the big occasion.
By 1940, Globe Theater was located at 141 N. Broad, and C. J. Alden was manager. In 1952, Frank Hollis entered the picture as manager and other than the late 1950’s Hollis was listed as owning the theater.
In 1951, a huge grand opening ceremony was held at the Globe Theater for an Alan Ladd movie, Branded, which was filmed north of Globe near the Salt River Canyon.During the filming Ladd and his family stayed in Globe.Pictures of this event show the familiar blue and white marquee with a metal cutout of Ladd attached to it.The front of the theatre was also highlighted with large copper-covered columns.
In 1960 Hollis purchased a new drive-in theater named the Apache Drive-In located on U.S. 60 just north of the 60-70 junction.
The Apache Drive-In is one of the very few drive-ins left in the entire country. It operates May- September.
In July of 2005, the historic Trust Building and Globe Theater were burned in a fire that started during the night. It was a sad time for the city, with many residents watching and crying because of the loss. However, Globe Firemen, fighting the blaze, were able to save the historic marquee, which was mounted on the front wall of the theater
and was left standing when the fire was over.
The marquee, a part of the past, was carefully removed after the fire and when the new four-plex cinema was built, the marquee was repaired, the colorful neon lights of long ago were restored and it now shines brightly in the evenings.
