Globe Electric Light and Gas Company- 1916

Adobe Ranch Spa/ Desert Oasis Wellness Center – Current

*Exact construction date is unknown, but in the early part of the 20th century, the community of Globe was expanding rapidly especially after the arrival of the railroad in 1898.

Although the exact construction date is unknown, it is believed to have been between 1905 and 1910.

At the time, Globe Light & Power Company started providing power to the residents of the copper community built a two-story building at 138 S. Broad Street for the offices, while their power plant was a concrete building faced with red brick further down on Broad Street.

In the 1920’s, Arizona Edison replaced the Globe Light & Power Company as providers of electricity for the growing Globe community, utilizing the office building for the company business downstairs and the upper floor originally were the living quarters for the manager of the company.  Later, Arizona Public Service, still in the same site, made this one of the oldest single-company buildings on Broad Street.

Through those early years there was a series of APS managers who were community leaders, including:

W. B. Lewis through 1952,

George McGregor,

Milo White  and

Guy Lunt.

Broadstreet Dentistry

APS sold the building when they moved to new headquarters on Apache Trail in 1983 to Tokamo, Inc. (Midge Maloy) for $23,000.  She in turn quit claimed the structure to Globen Enterprises, Inc.,  under John Neary, in 1992.  The downstairs was then rented to a dentist, Dr. James Smith and the Broad Street Family Dentistry, who did extensive renovation on the building to make it operable for his business.

Hicks Chiropractic Clinic

The upstairs of the building was considered untenable because of damage after the demolition of the Dominion Hotel which burned in the 1980s,  and had sat vacant until Dr. Therese Hicks purchased it in 2001, for her Chiropractic offices: Hicks Chiropractic.

She did major renovations to both the first and second floor with new plumbing and electrical, and all new interiors. The downstairs was significantly altered  with new private treatment spaces created.  Dr. Hicks’ small private office had the plaster removed from the brick and a window installed for a view to the south.  The back warehouse was converted to accommodate an x-ray facility and more treatment space. The kitchen also needed rebuilding, not just repair, as all the cabinetry was in pieces and the sink was cracked.  New cabinets were ordered and an island was built from material from  demolished bowling alley lumber, and some walls and other changes were needed to make it a kitchen one could live in.

The building was on the 25th Historic Home and Building Tour and served as both a Chiropractic Clinic and the Adobe Ranch Spa for many years.

Desert Oasis Wellness Clinic

Recently in 2011, when frozen pipes burst in the ceiling sending water cascading throughout the second and first floors the repairs required another extensive remodel and six month later it has opened a new chapter once again.

NOTE:

It has been said that when the Martin Theater and then the Fox Theater were thriving there was a door both upstairs and downstairs going into the theater, and apparently theater-goers could slip out of the performances for a private performance next door.
