ADOT plans 25- mile detour on San Carlos beginning April 5

SAN CARLOS- Plan for 25-mile detour while work is underway

The first phase of a project to improve safety and traffic flow on the San Carlos Apache Reservation will require a full closure of BIA 6 at US 70 beginning Wednesday, April 5, and continuing approximately four weeks. A 25-mile detour will be in place while the intersection is closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through early May.

Drivers should use US 70 east to BIA 170, and then north approximately four miles to reconnect with westbound BIA 6 (see detour map below).

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the San Carlos Apache Tribe and Federal Highway Administration, is constructing a right‐turn lane for westbound US 70 to northbound BIA 6 and an acceleration lane for traffic entering westbound US 70 from southbound BIA 6; installing a drainage culvert; milling and replacing pavement on US 70 and BIA 6; replacing the existing cattle guard across BIA 6; removing and replacing the existing guardrail and fencing; and other improvement work.

Phase one work includes installation of a drainage culvert and replacement of the cattle guard, and is scheduled for completion on May 4.  As always, schedules are subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen factors.

For the most current information about highway conditions statewide, visit ADOT’s Traveler Information Site at www.az511.gov, follow ADOT on Twitter (@ArizonaDOT) or call 511, except while driving.

Drivers will use US 70 east to BIA 170, and then travel north on BIA 170 for approximately four miles to reconnect with westbound BIA 6 while the first phase of construction is underway.
