The beginning of a perilous storm

5:45 PM Friday: Eileen Harbison took this photo from Surmont Street before she headed out to Six Shooter Canyon to feed a friend’s dog.  Coming back, she got caught in the flooding and had to shelter at a local home which sat on higher ground for three hours until the water receded.
It’s difficult to wrap one’s mind around the destruction that took place in Globe and Miami on Thursday and Friday due to severe storm behavior and flooding in both areas.

Board of Supervisors discuss flood recovery projects, costs, bond issue

Among the county’s considerations is spreading sediment piles totaling more than 14,000 cubic yards on county-owned land adjacent to the Russell Gulch Landfill (pictured here). This would reduce hauling costs, which would otherwise exceed $2 million, and create a designated future sediment placement area.

At their Jan. 20 meeting, the Gila County Board of Supervisors heard presentations about the numerous projects necessary for recovery and mitigation due to last September and October’s floods, and the costs involved.

Flood recovery unveils nuggets of history
The photos were found in a stack of file drawers that had been piled high in a corner of the little depot - known as the freight office - which sits adjacent to Globe’s iconic 1916 Train Depot on north Broad Street.  Donated to Kip Culver, who ran Globe’s Mainstreet Program and spearheaded the restoration of the train depot and freight office, they sat forgotten among the paint cans and other projects, yet to be gotten to.
The wall between Gila County RV Park and the creek is more than 100 years old and has been poured over the years. The flood caused it to fail from the inside, Demroo says. Once it is rebuilt to meet current building codes, he says the family can rebuild the other half of the RV park.

“It was a year we saw how quickly society can fall apart,” said Joanna TwentyThree, owner of three closely-knit businesses in downtown Miami — The Lyric Soda Fountain, music venue Thee 23 Skidoo, and longtime arts collective and gallery Miami Art Works.

When a “storm” becomes a “flood”
For many residents, the results are the same: homes with extensive water damage, whether from rising floodwaters or torrential rain. But when it comes to disaster assistance and insurance claims, the distinction between “storm” and “flood” has become a major obstacle.
At Power Elite Dance Academy, Tina McCarey slowly acquired several adjacent buildings on Broad street to house her dance studio. All of them and their contents were destroyed by the floodwaters. Contractors estimate repairs will run upward of $250,000.
Creativity endures: Local art spaces rebuild
As part of Globe Miami Times’ ongoing coverage of businesses affected by the September and October storms, this story highlights two local institutions — the Miami Art Works corridor and Power Elite Dance Academy. These stories detail the toll of the damage and their stories of recovery despite the challenges faced. From Miami to Globe, the people who make up these cultural anchors are working to bring the arts back to the historic downtown districts.
Lions Club members from Miami, Globe, Safford, Mesa Fountain of the Sun, and South Tucson, along with community volunteers, came together a week before to pack boxes with food and supplies for Globe-Miami flood victims.
The Lions Club District 21S launches major relief effort for Globe-Miami flood victims
Lions Club members and community volunteers loaded the vehicles of 154 families with food boxes, cooking oil, water, and blankets, each box containing $100 worth of groceries. A total of 553 people were served.
Arizona Propane was one of 13 other propane marketers which answered the urgent call for help according to a post on their page including several of these photos:
“Crews arrived with trucks, trailers, cranes, and — most importantly — people, ready to assist in the clean-up and recovery effort,” the statement said. “We are especially proud of and grateful to our four incredible service technicians who stepped up without hesitation.”

Emergency Management Specialist Madison Rybicki, on loan from Glendale’s Department of Emergency Management, gave an overview of the City’s coordinated response and recovery. Urgent repairs on US 60 between Globe and Superior began last Monday following damage incurred on the highway during the second round of flooding that hit the area just over two weeks ago.
