Understanding the science behind the floods

Local U of A co-op extension agent brings in two experts to explain how rainfall and watershed conditions affect our area

U of A Extension hosts talks from experts on impact of weather and watershed conditions

Christopher Jones, Globe-Miami local and Gila County’s University of Arizona Cooperative Extension agent, has organized two online seminars, open to the community and public, focused on factors that influenced the recent flood events in Globe-Miami.

Jones organized these presentations to provide access to expertise that can address various aspects of the flood and post-flood situation, he says.

“It is a way to share the known science about the event, especially if there’s any miscommunication,” he adds.

The first presentation was given by Dr. Mike Crimmins — a U of A faculty member in the Department of Environmental Science and climate extension specialist — on Dec. 2.

Crimmins discussed meteorologic conditions and rain events that led to the floods, focusing on the unique storm dynamics that produced record rainfall, while providing context to weather patterns seen here in Arizona.

He discussed conditions that led to Miami receiving between one to 1.5 inch hail and Globe receiving two inches of rain in roughly 30 minutes, and how ultimately having monsoon moisture and a fall and winter type of storm move into the area created conditions for a “perfect storm.”

A recording of the presentation is available on YouTube; click here to watch.

The next presentation is scheduled on Dec. 18 from 3 to 4 p.m. with Kelly Mott Lacroix, a watershed hydrologist for the Tonto National Forest, and will focus on watershed conditions that contributed to the Globe-Miami floods.

Kelly Mott Lacroix is the Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Coordinator and Watershed Program Manager for the Tonto National Forest. She has been the lead hydrologist for over 25 BAER assessments across the Southwest, including Telegraph, Bush, Hermit’s Peak, Calf Canyon, and Dragon Bravo fires.
