Don't miss “Rooted in Resilience,” where art, science, and community power come together and community science takes center stage at this first ever exhibition at the Center for the Arts in Globe. The University of Arizona STEAM in Action and Rethinking Wildfires, Floods, and Health invites you to this groundbreaking exhibit honoring the unique vulnerabilities and resiliencies of those living in central Arizona.

Listening session: Sharing stories & data

Wednesday, April 22, Earth Day

On April 22, The University of Arizona Rethinking Wildfires, Floods, and Health project invites you to pull up a chair and join an open, community-driven conversation about what the data means for you and your neighborhood.

We'll dig into findings from Rethinking Wildfires, Flash Floods, and Health — a community science project born out of real concerns from Miami and Globe residents following the devastating 2021 Telegraph Fire and subsequent flash floods. Together, residents and University of Arizona researchers studied how wildfires and floods may move harmful contaminants in soil and dust where people live, work and play. For this research, local community members volunteered and learned how to collect and test soil and dust samples from around their homes. Our University of Arizona team did the same in affected public areas. Community members proposed research questions, informed where to sample, collected data, shaped how it was shared, and made this research what it is.

We want to hear how climate extremes — wildfires, flash floods — have shaped your lived experience. We want to understand your community's unique strengths and vulnerabilities in ways that numbers alone can't capture. This is your chance to ask hard questions, share your story and help shape how environmental health research serves the people it's meant to protect.

This listening session is part of the first ever exhibition, Rooted in Resilience: Exploring Our Environmental Health through Art & Science.

Join the conversation! Come ready to talk. Come ready to listen. Come ready to be heard.

Youth Voices, Real Solutions: Closing event

Saturday, April 25

Join Us for a Powerful Closing Celebration. When young people lead, communities listen — and this closing event is proof! On April 25, STEAM in Action closes out the exhibit with youth taking the lead. These young researchers have been in the field, in the data, and in the community — doing real work on real issues that affect their neighbors and families.

Members of STEAM in Action's Youth Advisory Boards will present on the environmental and public health issues that matter most to them in their communities — sharing original research, data and intergenerational perspectives on real causes and real solutions. These are young people who have shown up, done the research and care deeply about the health and future of their communities. And we're not just closing an exhibit, we're celebrating! A special shoutout will go to our Globe High School senior Advisory Board members, who will graduate in May. Their dedication to community science and environmental justice definitely leaves a legacy!

Come cheer them on. Come be inspired. Come see what's possible when young people lead.
