Reckless Drivers: We deserve safe streets

Posted

To the Editor,

I am writing out of deep frustration and concern regarding the ongoing speeding problem in our neighborhood. For years, residents have voiced concerns about reckless drivers racing through our streets, putting children, pedestrians, and fellow motorists at risk. I have personally asked for help from the mayor, the chief of police, the city manager, and my own councilman. Each time I have been met not with solutions, but with pushback and excuses.

What more needs to happen before this issue is addressed? Must we wait until a serious accident, perhaps involving my child walking to school or a family crossing the street, before the city acknowledges the urgency? It should not take a tragedy for common-sense safety measures such as speed bumps, additional signage, or increased enforcement to be put in place.

The refusal to act not only undermines public trust but also communicates that residents’ safety is not a priority. As taxpayers and community members, we deserve streets where we can feel safe walking, biking, or simply stepping outside our homes. Other cities have implemented successful traffic calming measures that protect their residents. Why can’t ours?

I urge our local leaders to take this issue seriously before lives are needlessly lost. Speeding is not an inconvenience; it is a danger. The responsibility lies with city leadership to protect its citizens, and the time for action is now.

Sincerely,
Gregory Shoemaker
