Love Where You Live, a non-profit organization that transforms outdoor spaces throughout the Copper Corridor with public art, received $22,000 from the Cobre Valley Foundation last week to support their latest initiative, which is to install three dimensional art and sculptures throughout public spaces in Globe-Miami.
“The foundation has stepped up in a big way,” said Thea Wilshire, cofounder of Love Where You Live, in response to the donation.
The nonprofit is starting with the installation of large sculptures — at least four feet in any direction — at the Miami Gardens Walking Path just outside the hospital. Wilshire and Love Where You Live cofounder Regina Ortega are looking to get 12 to 20 sculptures along the path.
Ortega said the two hope that this will have a snowball effect and get the community excited to bring more 3D installations to public spaces throughout Globe-Miami.
Some of these sculptures will come from a sculpture contest, where the nonprofit will select three sculpture ideas from locals, paying those individuals to create their sculpture idea alongside a professional sculptor, whether it’s made of welded metal, cement, stone, or wood.
Other sculptures will be donated or purchased. Love Where You Live has already received a sculpture gifted from Lynnea Spencer, who recently purchased the sculpture “Desert Love” from Boyce Thompson Arboretum. The piece, created by artist Maria Madrid Reed, was commissioned by the arboretum as part of their Centennial Celebration Exhibit. Alex Heveri, whose work has recently been featured in the Glass in Flight exhibition at Boyce Thompson Arboretum, sold one of her sculptures at a 75% discount to Love Where You Live to be featured along the Miami Gardens Walking Path.
Meanwhile, the nonprofit is actively seeking more large sculptures to place along the trail, whether they are loaned or donated.
The goal is to have concrete slabs poured and for sculptures to begin appearing along the trail within the next two months, Ortega said.
“Thea and I are doers,” she said. “We like to say we always shoot for the stars.”
