From ghost walks to block parties

Fall in Globe-Miami

Posted

October is the start of cooler weather and some of our most memorable community events. Discover all there is to enjoy with our big run down of events this month! Globe-Miami comes alive with history, haunts and hometown fun. Explore Globe's historic district by lantern light on the Ghost Walk, where costumed actors bring Arizona's territorial past to life (and death) in buildings that have been featured on Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures." In late October, the roar of engines fills the air as riders head to nearby San Carlos for Run to the Rez, "the most spiritual ride in Arizona," honoring all veterans. True-crime fans won't want to miss Globe-Miami native Marshall Terrill and survivor Diane Schmid as they share the harrowing story behind Smitty: Living With a Serial Killer.

Then on Halloween night, the whole region heads downtown for the 30th Annual Globe Halloween Block Party, with 15 blocks of trick-or-treating, live music, a car show and costume contests. Wrap up the weekend on Sunday, November 1, with Repast & Remember, an intimate Italian dinner theater experience at the 1876 Historic Globe Cemetery, limited to just 50 guests. With cozy B&Bs, local restaurants and classic watering holes waiting between events, there's no better time to make a weekend of it in Globe-Miami.

Living With a Serial Killer: The Untold Story of "Smitty"

Bullion Plaza’s Second Friday Lecture Series at 6:30 pm

Bullion Plaza Museum and Cultural Center: 150 N Plaza Cir, Miami

FREE

In the 1960s, Charles "Smitty" Schmid charmed his way through Tucson's teen scene while hiding a terrible secret. Known as the "Pied Piper of Tucson," he murdered three teenage girls in a case that shocked the nation, made the pages of Life magazine and inspired one of America's most famous short stories.

Now, the woman who lived it is ready to tell her story. Globe-Miami native and author Marshall Terrill joins Diane Schmid, who survived life with the killer, for a rare in-person look at their book, Smitty: Living With a Serial Killer. Hear firsthand what it was like behind closed doors with one of Arizona's most notorious criminals, and how she lived through it.

Don't miss this harrowing, true-crime evening with a hometown author and a survivor finally sharing her side.

Trunk or Treat Returns to Downtown Miami from 6 to 9 p.m.

Sullivan Street in Downtown Miami, from Miami Avenue to Veterans Park

FREE

Downtown Miami will once again fill with costumes, candy and community spirit as the 2nd Annual Downtown Miami Trunk or Treat returns to Sullivan Street on Saturday, October 24, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The free event stretches along Sullivan Street from Miami Avenue to Veterans Park. Children are invited to dress in their favorite costumes and collect candy from decorated trunks, local businesses, vendors and community organizations along the route. The Tri City Fire Department will also bring a firetruck and hand out candy.

Live music will be playing at several spots, including The Chozen Few at Thee 23 Skidoo at 7 p.m., with more music planned near Town Hall and down by The Hole.

The celebration continues a tradition that began last year with the Hope Rising Halloween Fair, which brought the community together after the devastating flooding in the Globe-Miami area. Its success inspired organizers to bring it back as a Downtown Miami Trunk or Treat.

The event is organized by Christa Jennings and Miami Rising, a group of local small business owners working to support community events and promote Downtown Miami. Bullion Plaza Cultural Center & Museum is serving as the contributing nonprofit.

Organizers hope the evening brings families downtown, introduces residents to local businesses and organizations, and builds an even stronger sense of community in Miami.

24th Annual Ghosts of Globe Walking Tour from 6-8 p.m.

….Lanterns, Legends & the Unexplained

Tours depart from Globe Train Depot at: 230 S. Broad St. in Globe

Tickets $25

Step into Arizona's territorial past on this lantern-lit, two-hour walking tour through Globe's historic district. Moving in small groups from station to station, you'll meet costumed actors who bring documented history to life (and death), walking the same footsteps as the people whose stories you'll hear.

Globe's famously bawdy past has left plenty behind. Is it the copper in the soil? The unrest of the mined earth? Or something more? Three downtown locations have been featured on Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures," and our way-finders weave spooky tales into the route so you can judge for yourself.

You'll step inside landmarks rarely seen after dark: the 1916 Globe Train Depot, the 1910 Territorial Sheriff's Office and Jail, the 1906 Gila County Territorial Courthouse, and the 1910 three-story Elks Lodge.

Details: Tours depart from the Globe Train Depot between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults; children 10 and under are free with a paid adult (parental discretion advised). Group pricing is available. Buy online to pick your launch window, or walk up at the event. The route includes stairs, alleys and uneven pavement, so wear closed-toed shoes and bring a flashlight. A shuttle returns you to the start. For ADA needs, contact our office at least one week ahead.

Make a night of it with Globe's downtown restaurants, watering holes, B&Bs and hotels. Every ticket supports the Globe Downtown Association and its partners. Thank you for 28-plus years of support!

30th Annual Globe Halloween Block Party from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Covering 15 blocks of Historic Downtown Globe

FREE

Spend Halloween night in one of Arizona's most storied (and spirited) small towns! As one of Globe's longest-standing community events, the Halloween Block Party brings everyone downtown. What began 30 years ago as a simple block party has grown into a community trick-or-treat spanning 15 blocks of Globe's historic district, and everyone is invited.

Trick-or-treating on Broad Street runs from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, or until the candy runs out. Live music fills four stages with plenty of room to dance, while the kiddos can brave a free spooky jail walk. Stop by the photo booth for Ms. Yvette's Photography at Oak & Broad, and enter the social media contest for a chance at prizes for costumes, pumpkin carving and decor. You'll also find a car show, along with local businesses, nonprofits, clubs and churches joining the fun. Downtown restaurants and watering holes will be open to round out the night.

Streets close at 5 p.m. and reopen by 9 p.m. Make a weekend of it with Globe's B&Bs and hotels, and come back for the ghost walk while you're here.

The whole regional community comes together to make this night happen, so don't forget to say "thank you" along with your "trick or treat!"

This isn't your average taco lineup. The festival celebrates tacos and the culture behind them, with featured chefs including Food Network's Aarón Sánchez, Maria Mazon and Beau MacMillan. You'll find everything from traditional Mexican favorites to creative, festival-only tacos you won't find anywhere else, so come hungry.

Beyond the food, you can sip premium Tequila Corrido margaritas, catch live culinary and mixology demonstrations throughout the weekend, and, if you upgrade to VIP, enjoy tequila tastings. Bringing the whole crew? Kids 12 and under get in free, which makes this an easy family outing.

Tickets and Details

General admission starts at $23 per day, and VIP Agave tickets, for guests 21 and older, run about $116. Tickets are sold online only at ticketweb.com, with no sales at the gate, and each day requires its own ticket. Food and drinks are purchased separately; last year tacos were around $4 and margaritas around $10. Gates open at 11 a.m. both days, and parking is free. Buy through the official site rather than resale sites, which are charging two to three times as much.
