The city will pursue NRCS funding for material removal from the floodway in Pinal Creek, as Gila County will be handling Russell Gulch and the canyons. NRCS funding has a 25% match and a 220-day limit on work. NRCS also has a faster reimbursement cycle than DEMA, where they will reimburse costs from month to month once bills are paid. 

Citing aging equipment and rising costs for managing and maintaining the sewer system, Miami Town Council lays out the need to raise rates in order to cover the cost of sanitation and waste water services. 

At their Dec. 16 meeting, the Gila County Board of Supervisors heard a lengthy presentation about flood recovery efforts and funding, with costs expected to reach the double-digit millions.

“We're going into long-term recovery: We need to build back, better and safer, and we can't just make it up as we go,” says Melissa Steele, Economic Development Manager for the City of Globe. “That includes the City; that includes residents; that includes business owners. Menlove pointed out that the full cost of the expansion is not yet known, much of the cost of Cell 3A went to infrastructure, and that early estimates suggested Cell 3B could cost roughly half of what Cell 3A ultimately cost.

December events will proceed as scheduled, including First Friday and the Light Parade. First Friday will serve as the kickoff for a new month-long series of events called “Hope for the Holidays,” developed in partnership with the Globe Downtown Association, the Chamber of Commerce, Cobre Valley Center for the Arts, the United Fund, Love Where You Live, and the Globe Fire Department.

At their Nov. 18 meeting, the Gila County Board of Supervisors discussed how to remove a building that stands in the way of expanding the Russell Gulch landfill. They also approved a slate of motions, including progress on the Pinal Creek Waterway Cesspool Project.

Lobbyist Patricia Powers gave an update to the Gila County Supervisors in November and described a changing federal landscap including staffing churn within agencies and a "flood the zone" approach to policy and communication.

In a detailed discussion, City leaders explained how flood recovery will be funded and what help is available to residents and businesses. The discussion clarified that most government assistance will come as reimbursement for public costs.
