The Globe High School Tigers boys’ varsity basketball team looked right at home on Tuesday, Dec. 9, as they hosted the Catalina High School Trojans. From the opening tip, it was clear Globe was in control.
Coming off a previous win against Catalina last season, the Tigers picked up right where they left off, putting together a complete performance in a convincing 64-31 victory. The win marked back-to-back victories for Globe and gave the Tigers some positive momentum as they head toward the Christmas break.
Globe wasted no time setting the tone, opening the game 2-for-2 from beyond the three-point arc. The Tigers’ energy carried over on both ends of the floor, highlighted by a strong sequence from Reymondo Cassadore, who grabbed a rebound and finished a put-back before jumping a passing lane on the full-court press and converting an easy layup.
That press would be a theme all night. Globe’s defensive pressure limited Catalina’s offensive possessions and kept the Trojans from finding any rhythm. By the end of the first quarter, the Tigers had jumped out to a commanding 22-7 lead.
The Tigers continued to apply pressure in the second quarter, mixing in the full-court press and forcing tough shots. Ethan Edwards provided the spark offensively, knocking down back-to-back three-pointers to stretch the lead to 23 points before burying another deep shot late in the half. Globe headed into the locker room with a comfortable 40-13 advantage.
Catalina made a small push in the third quarter, but Globe responded with toughness inside. Byron Shorty came up big with strong rebounding and timely buckets in the paint, helping the Tigers maintain control. After three quarters, Globe still led comfortably, 50-24.
The Tigers closed out the game with poise, finishing off the Trojans 64-31.
Shorty led Globe with 19 points, while Edwards added 17 points. Cassadore added eight points, and Barbarino Gilbert chipped in seven to round out a balanced offensive effort.
The win improved Globe’s record to 3-7 on the season, and the Tigers now sit at 5-10 heading into the holiday break. Globe will look to carry that momentum into the new year when they return to action on Jan. 6 against regional foe Valley Christian.
