Tiger Sharks overcome adversity

Globe High School swim team sets records in remarkable 2025 season

For a program that only started three years ago, the Globe High School Tiger Sharks have already made quite a splash. The 2025 swim season turned out to be their strongest yet — filled with broken records, personal bests, and a gritty display of teamwork that impressed everyone, including Coach Barry Schwenk.

“This team showed incredible heart,” Schwenk said. “They faced more challenges than most teams do in a season, but they never gave up.”

The challenges were real. Just weeks before the Buckeye Qualifier on Oct. 25 — the final and most important meet of the year — Globe’s pool was abruptly closed due to a lack of staffing because of flooding. That meant the Tiger Sharks went into competition without having practiced in the water for nearly three weeks. Despite that setback, the team competed against 11 other high schools and came away with some impressive finishes: the boys placed second overall, and the girls took third.

Senior Evelyn Parker wrapped up her Globe High career in spectacular fashion. Parker, who now holds all but one school record, narrowly missed the Division III state provisional qualifying times in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke, coming within a second in each event.

Sisters Julia Miramontes and Kat Miramontes took third place in the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley, respectively. Julia also took third place in the 500-yard freestyle.

Junior Matthew Pollock also made waves this year, as he holds all but two records for the Tiger Sharks. He took third in the 50-yard freestyle at the Buckeye Qualifier, missing the state qualifying mark by just half a second. Though he fell short of a personal best in the 200-yard freestyle, Pollock’s performances were instrumental to Globe’s team success.

Pollock wasn’t alone in delivering standout performances. Matthew Bolinger met the state provisional time in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Aiden Alvarez and Michael Webb finished second and third in the 200-yard individual medley.

Globe even swept the podium in the 100-yard butterfly, with Bolinger, Landen Hostetter, and Alvarez taking first, second, and third.

Both the boys’ and girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay teams placed third — a fitting symbol of Globe’s teamwork and resilience. The boys’ team included: Bolinger, Pollock, Alvarez and Garrett Hostetter. The girls’ team included: Briana Shin, Parker, Liza Shank and Kaycee-Lynn Westbrook.

The Tiger Sharks rewrote their record board this season. New records for 2025 are:

  • Evelyn Parker – 200 yard Free, 200 yard Individual Medley, 50 yard Free,100 yard Free, 500 yard Free, and 100 yard Backstroke
  • Evelyn Parker, Kat Miramontes, Teairsa Ellis and Liza Shank – 200-yard Free Relay
  • Matthew Pollock, Matthew Bolinger, Landen Hostetter and Weston Wong – 200-yard Medley Relay
  • Matthew Pollock – 200-yard Free, 200-yard Individual Medley, 100-yard Butterfly, 100-yard Free, and 500-yard Free
  • Michael Hogan, Bolinger, Aiden Alvarez and Pollock – 200-yard Free Relay and 400-yard Free Relay

Considering the limited preparation time and adversity they faced, the 2025 Tiger Sharks’ season was nothing short of remarkable. Their perseverance, sportsmanship, and record-setting swims made 2025 a season to remember.

“The team’s performance was not just surprising,” Schwenk said. “It was outstanding.”
