The Miami High School Lady Vandals varsity volleyball team continues to show heart and hustle, even as they face another challenging season on the court. With only two seniors on a roster full of underclassmen, this young squad is gaining valuable experience each time they step up to serve, dig, and swing.
Because of flood damage to the Miami High School gym, the Lady Vandals hosted Gilbert Classical Academy last week at Lee Kornegay Intermediate School. The smaller venue—with its noticeably lower ceiling—added an extra layer of challenge for both teams, but it did not stop Miami from putting up a spirited fight.
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle. Junior Tamia Pietila came out swinging for the Lady Vandals, racking up four kills early on as Miami traded points with GCA. The Lady Vandals held an 18-17 lead late in the set, powered by tough defense from Senior Charisma Madrid and a strong serving run by Junior Grace Cruz. But a late surge from GCA closed the set 25-22.
In the second set, both sides struggled with service errors, but Miami found early momentum. Tamia’s blocking presence at the net, along with another key stuff from Sophomore Tessa Roberts, kept the Vandals in front 12-8 before GCA again found its rhythm from the service line to take the set 25-18.
The third set saw the visitors turn up the pressure, but the Lady Vandals never quit. Miami fought back from a deep deficit to close the gap before falling 25-14. Despite the loss, the team’s energy and effort never wavered.
While the wins have been hard to come by, this young Miami squad continues to grow stronger and more cohesive with every match. With only two seniors, the foundation being built now promises brighter seasons ahead for the Lady Vandals.
