On Feb. 2, 2026, the gym at Miami High School felt like it was holding its breath.
And then it happened.
With a fast-break layup midway through the night, junior guard Tamia Pietila scored her 2,000th career point in a Miami Lady Vandals uniform. The crowd erupted. Teammates wrapped her in celebration. And just like that, Tamia joined one of the most exclusive clubs in Arizona high school basketball.
When asked what went through her mind in that moment, Tamia didn’t talk about records.
“I just thought about all the games it took to get to this milestone and how cool it is to be on such a short list of others who have accomplished this.”
That answer tells you everything you need to know. Because while 2,000 career points is rare territory, especially for a junior, Tamia’s story has always been about more than numbers.
In 86 varsity games, she has experienced both heartbreak and triumph. As a freshman, she led Miami with 567 points, averaging 19.6 per game. As a sophomore, she elevated her game to 707 points (22.8 per game), helping the Lady Vandals finish as 2A State Runners-up in 2023-2024. One year later, Miami flipped the script and captured the 2A State Championship in 2024-2025 — and once again, Tamia led the charge.
This season has been historic. During her junior year, she poured in 814 points, averaging 28.1 per contest, which places her eighth in the Arizona state record book for single-season scoring across all conferences. She currently ranks 13th nationally among juniors in three-point baskets made with 96, ninth nationally in assists with 212, and 11th nationally with 210 steals.
And if that wasn’t enough, the game before reaching 2,000 points, she delivered a quadruple-double for the ages against San Tan Charter: 58 points, 15 steals, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Let that settle in. Her 2,000 career points don’t just represent consistency, they place her within reach of even bigger history. Tamia is now just 74 points away from passing the 20th-ranked player in the Arizona state record book for career scoring across all conferences. She also sits 417 points away from the number one spot in 2A career scoring. And she’s still a junior.
But ask Tamia how she has grown since her first varsity game, and she won’t bring up rankings.
“In 86 games, I’ve experienced successes and failures … I’ve loved the special moments with my teammates and coaches. It’s been important to treat every play like it’s the first and last.”
That mindset stands out to Miami Athletic Director Sammy Gonzales.
“Reaching 2,000 points is a huge milestone for any player, but what makes it especially remarkable is that Tamia accomplished it as a junior,” Gonzales said. “It reflects the countless hours she’s put in behind the scenes. Younger players see more than a scorer, they see someone who shows up every day, competes the right way, and elevates everyone around her.”
Behind those numbers are countless extra hours in the gym, something her head coach and mom, Crystal Pietila, sees firsthand.
“To say as parents that we are proud is an understatement,” she said. “There are days after practice she will go to the gym to lift weights. There are no off days for her. God blessed you with this talent. Forever grateful for family and friends, especially her teammates past and present, because she couldn’t do this alone.”
Tamia agrees.
“It truly takes a village … Family, friends, teachers, coaches, opponents and, of course, my fans. We are far from done!”
And that may be the most exciting part of this entire story.
Two thousand points is a milestone most players only dream of. For Tamia Pietila and the Miami Lady Vandals, it’s simply another step, with more history still within reach.
