Book Club donates to Globe Library

Once again, the Tuesday Book Club made their annual donation to the Friends of the Library. Consisting mainly of membership dues, the contribution continues a historic connection between the women of Globe and support for literacy.

“The funds collected will assist in purchasing supplies for Library programs,” says Linda Burgo, President of the Friends of the Globe Public Library.

Friends of the Globe Public Library, a non-profit organization, supports library programs such as summer reading and story time, primarily through United Fund grants. They also collect dues and donations and put on local fundraisers such as Bunco nights, raffle baskets and community yard sales.

The Tuesday Book Club has been meeting in homes and church halls around Globe, since the mid-1940s. Each meeting follows a familiar format — formal announcements, an exchange of community news and a presentation of a book, author, or other topic of interest. One person talks at a time, until dessert and coffee is served and the socializing takes over. Many members, including Robin Wurst, Claudia Sue Armor, Margo Bracamante, participate in both organizations.

Before the advent of the Tuesday Book Club or the Friends of the Globe Public Library, there was the Women’s Club of Globe supporting the Old Dominion Library, which was built as a memorial to three miners killed in the 1906 Interloper Shaft fire.

When the Old Dominion mining operations closed in 1940, the Globe Women's Club assumed management and operation of the historic library and paid the building's insurance and maintenance, through fundraising events such as seasonal fashion shows.

The historic library burned down in March of 1981. After securing interim locations, the insurance money from the Old Dominion Library was used to buy the building that houses the Globe Public Library today.
