PRESS RELEASE

Increased fire restrictions for state trust lands

Lack of precipitation and uptick in fire activity warrant increased fire  restrictions

Posted

With hot and dry conditions anchored in and thousands of firefighters and overhead committed  to numerous fires across the state, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management plan to increase fire  restrictions this week to reduce the risk of new wildfire starts.

Last weekend’s red flag conditions challenged firefighting resources statewide. According to DFFM’s Arizona Dispatch  Center, crews responded to 40 new incidents, including the Spring Fire northwest of Flagstaff, the Steamboat Fire outside  of Kearny, and the Dobbins Fire near Tonopah. Additionally, local, state, and federal personnel and equipment remain  committed to large-scale incidents, including the 11,000-acre Pocket Fire near Sedona and the nearly 12,000-acre  Sycamore Fire outside of Globe.

Due to the increased activity, unfavorable weather, and resource availability, starting on Tuesday, June 30, at 8:00 a.m.,  stage 2 fire restrictions go into effect on state trust lands in Coconino, Gila, Maricopa and Pinal Counties. In addition,  stage 2 restrictions remain in place on state trust lands within Apache, La Paz, Navajo and Yuma Counties. Stage 1  restrictions are in effect on state trust lands within Mohave and Yavapai Counties.

Under stage 2 restrictions, campfires, target shooting and fireworks are not allowed. Equipment use is restricted to  specific times of the day when weather conditions are more favorable to outdoor work.

State, federal and tribal agencies evaluate fire restrictions weekly, considering fuel and weather conditions, fuel loading,  fire activity, and resources needs, and other factors. Restrictions will be lifted when agencies determine conditions are  favorable to do so.
