Globe’s holiday glow comes from the heart

Christmas Lighting Decorations brings the sparkle to downtown

Globe’s downtown is glowing a little brighter this Christmas, and not because the city splurged on new decorations. Thanks to a generous donation from Christmas Light Decorators (CLD), a high-end holiday display now sparkles across Broad Street and key civic landmarks at no cost to Globe.

Councilmember Mariano Gonzalez said he was stunned when he learned the installation was being gifted. “I was dumbfounded when I heard the news,” he said. “Even though I've seen countless acts of kindness since the flooding on September 25th, this one stopped me in my tracks. It's a heartfelt gesture.”

The donation comes at a meaningful time. After the devastating flood this fall, Globe is still rebuilding, and many city crews remain focused on infrastructure repairs. Gonzalez said the lights represent more than seasonal cheer. “It means Hope,” he said. “Of all the gifts to give, giving Hope is priceless.”

Christmas Light Decorators, based in Mesa, has been lighting up homes and public spaces since 1989. Owners Aaron and Maralyn Farrelly took over the family-run business in 2021. While CLD works mostly in Arizona, they also design displays across the country. Still, this project felt especially close to home.

The idea took shape during a quarterly leadership meeting, the Farrellys explained. As team members talked about how heavy rains had affected their own scheduling, the conversation turned to Globe. News of the flooding was still fresh, and the scale of the damage weighed on everyone in the room. “It was this moment of unity,” Aaron said. One of their leadership team members, Rob, mentioned that his dental hygienist wife had recently treated a Globe resident who could help open a door to city officials. That small hometown link quickly turned into a bigger plan; the crew wanted to support a neighboring community in a tangible way, and the upcoming holidays felt like the perfect opportunity.

CLD connected with Globe through a local resident and quickly began planning with city staff. Maralyn recalled walking downtown with officials, learning the stories behind historic buildings, and meeting business owners still recovering from the storm. “It made it that much more personal,” she said. “There’s a very special charm to the town and the people; they are all so warm, kind, and friendly.”

The display now includes lighting and décor at the Municipal Building, Center for the Arts, historic train depot, library, Chamber of Commerce, public safety buildings, and along Broad Street. One standout is a newly designed tower tree centered on the Center for the Arts bandstand, built entirely in America. The tree is a new installation, and a favorite of Aaron’s. “We’re very proud of what we’ve built, down to the greenery and the quality and craftsmanship of the tree.” All in all, the Farrellys estimate the whole project is valued at over $60,000.

But still, both owners said the goal isn’t about recognition, it’s about providing relief and reassurance. “We knew the people of Globe’s time, energy, and resources have been devoted to cleanup,” Aaron said. “We hoped to lift the burden and create a stress-free holiday.” Maralyn added, “We just want them to feel supported…and know their neighbors are there.”

They also hope the lights draw visitors up the hill to shop, eat, and enjoy Globe’s holiday events, including the Dec. 13 parade and First Friday celebrations. For Gonzalez, the message is simple: “Thank you, CLD, for bringing many gifts of joy to our citizens… Merry Christmas!”
