From bluegrass to opera to classic rock, this year’s local community concert series is bringing a variety of music for all ages and musical tastes. The Globe-Miami Community Concert Association is excited to present its 70th season of bringing musical performances to the area.
A goal of GMCCA is to expose the community to music they wouldn’t normally hear.
“We do outreach to the schools and to the nursing homes,” says Sue Jones, GMCCA board president. “We want to give kids the opportunity to see things they wouldn’t normally see.”
She said they provide complimentary tickets to students and nursing home residents, and want to give them a memorable experience.
This year’s season features six concerts, including performances by One of These Nights, The 3 International Tenors, Paradise Winds, Nicole Pesce, America the Beautiful, and The Waddington Brothers.
The concerts take place at the High Desert Middle School Auditorium and run from October 21 to the end of April.
According to Jones, a significant amount of work goes into attracting talent to Globe-Miami. She says that in the past, there was a national organization that used to help identify talent, but it has since disappeared.
Plus, “Arizona used to have something called Arizona Humanities Roster and that also went away,” she says.
She says the association now works with Tad Management, which has helped with bringing three of this year’s groups to Globe-Miami. For the others, she said she spends a lot of time on looking for quality talent.
The GMCCA consists of a 20-member board and relies heavily on community support to remain active. The memberships it sells are what help pay for the concerts. They currently have 250 to 260 members, and are always looking for more.
Membership rates are as follows: $100 for a two-parent family, $60 for a one-parent family, $50 per adult, and $10 per student. That membership fee pays for the entire concert season. Jones also added that members also get 2 complimentary tickets to enhance involvement and attendance. The association hopes that the increased exposure will also garner more members.
