When the Globe Tigers and Miami Vandals take the field, the bleachers fill fast. This rivalry draws a crowd that's equal parts Globe and Miami — parents, sibling, and cousins who've watched these same kids grow up together through rec ball, travel teams and everything in between. Picking a side is never simple. Last Wednesday, though, the outcome was.
The Globe Tigers rolled past the Miami Vandals 13-2 in a non-conference matchup at historic Central Field, snapping a three-game losing streak with their most complete performance in recent weeks. The win came on the heels of a blowout loss to Florence that Globe was eager to put behind them, and they did exactly that.
Central Field, dating back to 1881, served as a fitting backdrop. Globe wasted little time asserting themselves, piling up 13 hits in the afternoon, with most of them coming in the final innings. The Tigers are now 2-1 when they reach the 11-hit mark, and Wednesday's output reflected a team that owns a .299 batting average, .405 on-base percentage, and .397 slugging percentage, all significantly better than Miami's numbers across the board.
The story of the game, however, belonged to senior Jaeger Franco. The multi-threat weapon delivered arguably his best performance of the season, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, a new career-high, while adding two stolen bases and two RBI. On the mound, he was equally impressive: four innings, two earned runs, five hits allowed. It was the kind of two-way outing that makes opposing coaches lose sleep.
Globe has now won three games this season by more than seven runs, so Wednesday's margin was nothing out of the ordinary for a team accustomed to playing with force. Their fielding, a .876 clip, continues to rank among the best in the region.
For Miami, the loss extended a rough stretch. The Vandals have dropped five of their last six, falling to 4-8 on the season. Nathan Madrid remains their most reliable bat, but Globe's pitching kept the damage well contained.
With the win, Globe improves to 4-6 overall with ten more games, all away games, ahead of them
