The Tonto National Forest announced that it would double the length of the public comment “scoping” period for the Resolution Copper Project, from 60 to 120 days, at a scoping meeting last night in Superior. Last night’s meeting was one of four currently scheduled in the area that provide an opportunity for members of the public to voice concerns with and influence alternatives to Resolution’s current plan to mine the Oak Flat area using “block cave” mining, which will result in a crater that is 1,000 feet deep at the center and 1.5 miles in diameter. Other issues that came up at the meeting last night included concerns about the potential public health impacts of another mine in the area and questions about the proposed tailings facility, which will take up approximately seven square miles once complete.
A similar meeting will be held tonight in Globe tonight, April 5, 5:00-8:00 p.m.at the Elks Lodge, 1775 East Maple Street. You do not need to be present for the whole meeting.
