SAVE THE DATE: The 2025 State of the City Address is scheduled for October 9th at Veterans Park in front of City Hall from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Come join us for this year’s Address as we reflect on our city’s journey, celebrate recent milestones, and share exciting updates that are shaping our future. We continue our journey with a bold vision, continued momentum, and a spirit of unity that keeps us moving forward. Let’s honor our progress, embrace what’s ahead, and keep building a city we are proud to call home.
The City Council received a presentation from Public Works Assistant Director, Vince Mariscal regarding the current status of the Common Sewer Line Project. This project addresses a longstanding issue in the city where, historically, multiple homes were connected to a single, shared sewer line rather than each having an independent connection to the city’s main sewer system.
This condition has persisted for decades, creating maintenance and liability challenges. In 2020, Council initiated a project to begin resolving these issues, prioritizing properties with the most critical needs. The effort has continued since then through a structured application process. Projects are evaluated and addressed based on the severity of the condition and the potential impact on residents.
The City Council accepted an $8K grant from Freeport-McMoRan to support the implementation of the DARE program at Copper Rim School. This funding will directly support a collaborative initiative between the City of Globe Police Department School Resource Officer program and the Globe Unified School District. The D.A.R.E. Program stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. It is a nationally recognized educational program that educates students about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, tobacco use, vaping, violence and bullying, and risk behaviors.
Council accepted a Grant in the amount of $1,038,243.40 from the Arizona Department of Transportation for the construction phase 1 of the “Broad Street Sidewalk Project”. This important project focuses on replacing and upgrading priority areas of sidewalk infrastructure along Broad Street, enhancing safety, accessibility, and walkability for our residents.
The design phase of the project was previously completed using an allocation of $204.000.00 from the Department of Transportation, ensuring that the planning and engineering groundwork was professionally established before moving into construction. We thank ADOT for their continued partnership and support, and we remain committed to improving public infrastructure that contributes to a safer and more connected community.
Living Streets Alliance has been hired to lead the Safe Street Program that includes surveys, participatory data collection, town halls, and pop-up events. This is an opportunity for Globe to bring enhancements to Broad Street through this community-led, federally funded traffic safety demonstration program. Broad Street will undergo temporary traffic calming and walkability upgrades for a ten-month period to pilot concepts and determine what works best. Once completed, the city will then submit an application for additional funding to make the recommended changes permanent.
The first phase of the project timeline was completed on September 23rd which included a site visit and downtown walkabouts. We want to thank all the downtown business partners who participated in this initial process of the downtown walk and workshop. The next phase is scheduled for November of 2025 which includes the community engagement component.
The next Coffee with Mayor Al Gameros is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15th at 1:00 pm, hosted by Copper Cities Coffee, located at 1100 N. Broad Street, Suite F. This event offers a great opportunity for residents to meet with the Mayor and Vice-Mayor, ask questions, and get the most accurate and up to date information on city projects—past, present, and upcoming. A special thank you to Copper Cities Coffee for graciously hosting this community event.
