Highlights from Oct. 14 Globe City Council meeting

Updated October 16, 2025, 9:08 AM: Globe City Council's October 14 meeting was focused on relief and recovery, as well as public safety, after the region had experienced another set of storms and flooding. These are some of the highlights of the meeting.

SBA federal loans available

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the availability of low interest federal disaster loans to Gila County flood victims, and has customer service representatives on hand at Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce.

Haskins and Yuma Bridges remain Closed

Some repairs still have to be made prior to opening Yuma and Haskins bridges, including rerouting water and gas lines.

City rapid assessments deem businesses and homes safe or unsafe, some permitting waived

The city has been performing rapid assessments of businesses and residences. Assessments result in one of three tags: green, yellow, or red.  Green indicates a building is safe to enter, yellow means to proceed with caution, and red means the building is unsafe due to structural hazards.

The city has performed 59 commercial rapid assessments, which resulted in 15 red tags, 12 yellow tags, and 32 green tags.

State teams performed upwards to 150 residential rapid assessments, and the city performed an additional 14, which resulted in six red tags, four yellow tags, and four green tags.

Building owners can also bring in their own engineers to come in and evaluate the structures.

The city has done away with some permitting to speed up the recovery process, ie: minor structural, minor electrical, drywall repairs.

Expect Broad Street closures to remain

A couple of two-story buildings on Broad Street will likely need to be fenced off due to safety issues.

Broad Street as a whole will stay closed at least through Sunday, except during the day, South Broad Street will be open to owners, businesses, and patrons.

Forgoing special events in Downtown Globe

City staff recommends foregoing special events downtown from now until the end of November due to building issues and safety issues. Globe Police Department doesn’t have staffing to enforce safety measures. The area has seen an uptick in observers wanting to see devastation on the north end of Broad.

So far, the city acknowledged the cancellation of the Apache Jii (which has since been relocated rather than canceled), the City of Globe Citizens Academy, First Friday, the remainder of the pool season, State of the City address, the city community cleanup, and the downtown Globe Halloween celebration.

Relief funding collected by United Fund of Globe-Miami

United Fund of Globe-Miami donations are at more than $1,078,600 for businesses and  more than $528,330 for residents. Business funds will be made available via Local First Arizona, and  residential funds will be made available via Salvation Army.

Local First Arizona business grant applications will go live this week. Businesses can apply for up to $5,000 that would be given immediately. A second round of larger funds will later be awarded to businesses, determined by Local First Arizona, based on need.

The Salvation Army application is already open for qualified residential applicants who can receive up to $7,500 in qualifying expenses. Applications are available at Salvation Army in downtown Globe.
