Whether buying a car, getting groceries, or creating a craft, the building at 383 N. Hill St. in Globe has met the community’s needs for nearly a decade. The building currently housing Hill Street Mall is turning 96 years old this year, and the owner is planning a celebration to gear up toward its centennial in 2030.
The building originally opened as a Pay‘N Takit grocery and Gila County Historical Museum in 1930. Over the past 96 years, the building has housed a Safeway, a dealership for Diggs and Cobre Valley Motors, a Coca-Cola bottling facility, and Johnny’s Country Corner.
Roz Harris has owned the building since 2006, and has been running it with the help of her son Eric since 2006 — other employees and volunteers have helped along the way to keep the store going. They offer fabric and craft supplies, vintage, antiques, dealer species, and consignment items.
On Saturday, Feb. 14, cake will be served 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate the building built in the shape of Arizona. The celebration is planned for outside, weather permitting.
“It’s nice to have a real ‘birthday’ for the building,” Eric said.
He hopes to use the event to help them plan for the centennial.
The building has been closed intermittently since September 2025, with noticeable storage containers out front. The building suffered flood damage which tore off an edge of the roof. A new roof and ceiling are needed, which has required packing up much of the store’s inventory. Once the repairs are done, Roz and Eric will be at work rebuilding displays and looking for volunteers who love to decorate.
As the community gathers to celebrate the nearly century-old building, it’s clear that its rich history and ongoing legacy continue to serve as a vital part of the community’s fabric. The dedication of the current owners to keep the store in good repair ensures that this landmark will continue to be a symbol of local pride and community connection.
