FAQ: What to expect from the new GMT

Posted

Q: Will the monthly Globe Miami Times edition still come out each month, like always?

No. We have shifted all our efforts to producing a high-quality community paper which will come out every other week. You are holding the new Globe Miami Times. Here you will find not only arts, entertainment and stories about people, culture and events in the area you’ve come to associate with us, but also local sports, business, education, police/fire and coverage of local government. And you will see it more often.

Q: Why did you decide to switch to paid circulation?

The reason so many small rural weeklies have become shadows of themselves is because corporate formulas rely on canned content instead of real coverage. I’ve always believed that a good weekly paper is a foundational part of community life—for the people who live, work, and play here. Done right, it’s worth every drop of ink it’s printed with.

That’s the promise we’re making: to deliver a paper that’s not just news, but value and makes real connections. We want to be a resource that’s worth the cost of a cup of coffee a couple times a month. I’m asking for your support to help us make sure the Globe Miami Times has the resources to deliver for you.

Q: Where will I be able to get my paper?

GMT is building an expanded network of distributors to ensure our paper reaches readers across the region—from Globe-Miami to Apache Junction, San Carlos, and Roosevelt Lake. Our current distributors will be listed on our website and, in the future, will be featured in each issue of the paper.

We value these partnerships and provide great incentives for businesses who help us distribute GMT in their communities. If you’d like to sell the paper at your business, please reach out to Linda at gross@globemiamitimes.com.

Q: I heard the Silver Belt was going to resume publishing. Why are you still expanding GMT?

I started down this road when there was no indication the Silver Belt would ever be published again. But even if they do come back, the paper hasn’t been a viable news outlet for the region for years. We think we can do better.

Q: How can I help preserve a real community paper for our region?

Buy a paper. Give one to a friend. Put it out at your business. Subscribe. Visit our web site. And contribute your ideas and news. Think of us as your go-to place to share news, find out what’s happening or asking a question.

Calendar items, announcements and news tips can all be submitted by clicking on the “Send us your news!” tab on our web site, globemiamitimes.com, or by sending them to editor@globemiamitimes.com.

Submit news: What’s going on in your neighborhood? Want to know what is being built on the corner? Send us your news tips and questions and help us, help you know what’s happening around town. We don’t promise to act on all the news you send us, but each item is reviewed by our editorial team. We will follow up if we plan to cover the news item. You can use our news tip form to let us know about recent job promotions, new hires at the company, student achievement awards or when your government agency or organization holds its next meeting.

Get the word out: Good old-fashioned community announcements are back, and we’d love to hear what's new with you or your organization.  We make it easy to share your information. You can upload announcements on births, weddings, engagements and anniversaries with dedicated forms on our web site. Brief text announcements are free, longer ones carry a small fee that can include a photo.

Put it on the calendar: Our online calendar section can be used to inform readers about Save-the-Date notices for an event you are hosting, notices of family and high school reunions, where your band is playing or public events at your business. Calendar listings are free, but you can promote yours to the top of our listings for $15.

Find volunteers: We’re launching a ‘Volunteers Needed’ section with the goal of matching organizations seeking volunteers with individuals looking to contribute to the community in some way.  Craft a notice that outlines what you are looking for in a potential volunteer, including the number of hours and the type of work you need. This will help local residents and new arrivals looking to connect determine what’s a good fit for them.

Promote your small business: We will soon roll out our Service Directory page to help our readers connect with local professionals, from dog walkers to plumbers and from coaches to bookkeepers. Forget the scrolling on Facebook every time you need to find a service! Our directory will feature your business or service in print twice a month, for an affordable fee. You will be able to ensure your information is available when others need it most, in print and on the E-Edition as well as online. Plus, get a free BONUS large display ad with a six-month contract.

Obituaries: You can post these on our web site. Death Notices are free (up to 25 words) and longer obituaries of 500 words or more with a photo will be available for a reasonable fee. Please encourage your funeral director to post your notice to the paper as well.
