Blue's Shop Draws Business from Across the Country

The business recently completed a build on a 1968 Camaro for an alligator hunter in Florida

When it comes to custom fabrication and restoration of vehicles, Blue’s Shop in Globe has an edge in the trade.

The shop, which has been in business in Globe for the last six years, is the only official shop in the area offering this kind of work and is pulling in business both locally and from around the country. Cycling through seven to eight car builds at a time, the business operates with just nine employees, and is run by husband-wife owners Blue and Lisa Saiz.

One of the shop’s recently completed builds had been in the works for the last several years – a $100,000 project rebuilding a 1968 Camaro with a dashboard painted to look like alligator skin.

The project is for Tommy Henderson, a customer from Florida who came to Globe for contract work at the smelter. He discovered Blue’s Shop when he came in to get his truck detailed. He spotted the 1968 Camaro, which was Blue’s at the time, and bought it from him.

Then he asked Blue if his shop would rebuild it. Blue’s team spent the next several years working on the vehicle: disassembling the car, soda blasting the frame, doing metalwork, welding, bodywork, and replacing the motor with a new LS3 engine.

Henderson could’ve taken his business back to Florida, he recognizes, but he chose to have Blue and his team take up the project instead.

“They all do good work,” Henderson says. “The only inconvenient part of that is I can’t just ride by and see it. But, of course, they send me pictures.”

“It looks great,” he adds. “I can’t wait to actually sit in it and see it.”

Back in Florida, Henderson is an alligator hunter. Blue’s team airbrushed the dashboard so it would match the Camaro’s seats, which will be lined with alligator hide.

Now the Camaro is waiting to go to its next destination for interior work.

Meanwhile, Blue and his crew continue to work on other vehicles for customers out-of-state, including a vehicle from Alaska and a recently finished ‘69 Bronco from Minnesota.

“They’re coming from all over, and I can’t tell you how they’re hearing about us,” Blue says. “But the bottom line is we care about the quality of the job, whether it’s a collision job or we’re doing these high-end builds, it never changes, quality is always paramount.”
