Three confirmed dead, none missing, amid conflicting reports

Editor's note: The death toll has varied from one to four, but this is the latest information we have, from official and family sources.

Updated October 1, 2025, 1:46 PM: Reporting has been mixed between different sources, but at least three individuals are believed to have been killed in the aftermath of last week's destructive storms in Globe-Miami.

Family and friends of the victims have publicly confirmed the deaths of Teresa (Terri) Saenz and Heather Johnson and are asking the community for donations to help cover funeral expenses. An update from AZ Family states that police identified one of the victims as David Acevedo of Claypool.

The same article mentions another victim recovered in Wheatfields who has not yet been identified by authorities. However, this article from ABC15 suggests that the unidentified individual is Saenz. GMT also spoke with Globe City Mayor Al Gameros Wednesday morning (Oct. 1), and he said there are three confirmed deaths.

"It's three, three confirmed fatalities," he said. "That is the latest correct information from the team, and that's all I can go by."

Arizona’s Department of Forestry and Fire Management, which has taken over as the Incident Management Team, responded to a Facebook query regarding people missing earlier Tuesday, stating, “no one reported missing at this time - but SAR [Search and Rescue] continues to search.”

Globe local Pete Green was reported missing by his sister on Sunday. Globe Police Department reported that he was found safe on Monday afternoon.

AZ Central reported Sunday that, “Three people were believed to be dead as a result of the floods in Globe, Carl Melford of Gila County Emergency Management said Sept. 27. It was thought the number had decreased to two, but the department had not immediately responded to requests for updated numbers, as of Sept. 28.”

However, when Globe Miami Times’ publisher Linda Gross approached Medford at a press conference yesterday and asked who could provide current information on those dead or missing, Medford said he was not the point of contact for that information.

“You can try talking to anyone with a badge - police, fire, county,” he told her.

The incident management team’s public information officer Tiffany Davila said on Sunday that these numbers have to come from the City of Globe or the mayor.

This is a developing story.

NOTE: It is a persistent myth that people have to wait a certain number of hours before reporting someone missing. Arizona State Law prohibits a wait time on reporting missing persons.

If you are aware of any overdue or unaccounted for persons, call Gila County Sheriff’s dispatch line at (928) 425-4449 immediately.
