Traffic stop in Payson nets $86,000 of marijuana

Gila County – The Gila County Sheriff’s Office seized approximately 86.9 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop east of Payson on February 8th. The motorist assist was conducted by a White Mountain Apache Game and Fish Ranger who called in for assistance after seeing an indication of criminal activity.

A canine task force was deployed to search the vehicle and this resulted in the seizure of 86 bundles of marijuana located in numerous hidden compartments within the vehicle.

Street value is estimated at $86,900.

As a result of the investigation two individuals;Francisco Gavier Gutierrez Jr, age 20 and Rey David Mendez Guerrero, age 21, both of Douglas, have been booked into the Gila County jail for Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana for Sale, Transportation of Marijuana for Sale, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
